"You can learn a lot of skills by doing other things and then bringing the literacy and numeracy with it.
Stuart High School year eight level manager and social inclusion coordinator Tarna Rowden said the program needed the assistance of the community to begin.

The select students have been referred from teachers, year level coordinators and the school counsellor.
A police check would also be required but would come free of charge to volunteers in the program.

Miss Rowden said the program was open to everyone in the community, not just those who were trained in the education field.
Mr Coulter said volunteers would receive all training necessary to working in a school including reporting on neglect and abuse and Occupational Health and Safety.
"Some kids need that hands on experience and know that it is relevant instead of just going through the motions and thinking 'I'm never going to do this in my life'."

"These days we are looking for alternative ways to help students build on their skills and work on them rather than just 'chalk and talk' which a lot of kids these days don't respond to," Miss Rowden said.
Stuart High School counsellor, Greg Coulter said the aim of the program was to help apply everyday activities to learning.
The program, which originated in a South Australian school and is now used globally, sees the assistance of volunteers in the community to help disengaged students re engage with their education.

"We also have to do reports on it and they will be sent home to parents so we are all accountable to show that these kids are actually learning."
