In 1993, he set a world record when he used that technique to pick up two Ford Festivas, and their passengers, weighing a combined 5,340 pounds.
"The Husavelt Stone is one that is sort of my calling card. I beat old Magnus ver Magnusson, the Icelandic world champion, right in his own home country carrying their sacred stone," said Ernst. "I broke a 1,000 year old record there."
He's known for picking up two cars on his back, passengers included, but these days Gregg Ernst gets a bigger kick out of lifting spirits.
Among Ernst's accomplishments are winning the Canadian Strongman Championship in 1990, and setting a record in 1992 for carrying Iceland's storied Husafell Stone, which weighs roughly 418 pounds, for an excruciating 70 metres, at the World's Strongest Man competition.
Ernst is probably best known for his backlifts, a feat that involves placing a huge weight on a table like structure.
"Probably because it's hard, I guess," said Ernst.
"(There are) a lot of reasons to be discouraged, so any time you can give people something to believe in, some hope, encouragement, put a little heart in them, that's what we love to do," said the 49 year old.

Ernst, a former strongman competitor, and five of his boys make up the Christian a cappella quintet One Blood. The family group is touring local churches, retirement homes and the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre this week.
Recently, he splits his time between the blacksmith shop and traveling the country with his musical family.

Ernst said Reebok Furylite White the family's decision to form a musical group came from his eldest daughter whose interest in piano and singing led to a harmony group.

"You get under, and you just put the flat of your back against it, push with your arms and legs real hard, and up it comes," he said.
"I'm a farmer and a blacksmith and I work with my body so I wasn't totally excited about it, (but I said) 'Well, yeah, we can do that,' because I sing a little," said Ernst.
"We just realized there was a power in a cappella and that's why, although several of (the group members) are good instrumentalists, we've always stuck with just the voice almost exclusively," said Ernst.
Strongman now lifting spirits
The quintet is actually something of a pared down touring group. When wife Jennie and three more of the family's ten children join the quintet on stage they tour as the Ernst Family Singers.
Ernst, whose day job is as a marine blacksmith specializing in tall ship ironwork, no longer lifts competitively, though he still trains and he allows that he's still "pretty strong."

The Ernst boys dropped by Pathways Retirement Residence for a free performance on Tuesday and on Monday they did three shows at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre.
