The black bear in Ontario was walking through towns when the full spring bear hunt was in effect prior to 1999. The bears occasionally wandered through school yards prior to 1999. Some of the extreme incidents of nuisance bears happened prior to 1999 before the spring bear hunt was cancelled. I recall situations in Timmins in 1991 and 1992. I ask people to put their minds into recall. If peoples behavior has not changed, the incidents of nuisance bears will always be there. A spring bear hunt will not change that. A change in human behavior will.
We can live with bears without a lot of difficulty. Simple things like not feeding birds when grass turns green, not leaving food garbage out and available for animals including bears. These simple things are often so difficult or so it appears when one drives through Northern Ontario cities and towns. In know many of the residents who live in these towns feel a similar frustration. Drive through Timmins, Cochrane or Sault Saint Marie for example. The garbage laying around on some streets is astounding. Is it a surprise these towns have traditionally had a high number of nuisance bear issues for decades? I recall the news from 1991 and the news in the last few years and it is the same news as 20 plus years ago. Do not blame the bears. The complainers regarding nuisance animals are the Reebok All Terrain Super Womens
and children have never been killed or seriously injured by one of these bears, not in 100 years. They have occasionally walked through school yards since we have had school yards. No one has been hurt.
The black bear as an animal is primarily a vegetarian. Fortunately, it rarely hurts people. Bears that have become accustomed to getting food from neighborhoods have yet to attack a person, Saucony Excursion Tr7
Black bears need to find food, find enough food to regain energy lost during the prior winter and to find enough food to support them for the winter to come. Only about 3 to 4 of the months in the summer are lucrative enough to allow a bear the high calorie intake required Saucony Nomad Tr
Many people like to hunt in Northern Ontario. Most do it for fun, especially with regards to bear hunting. There are many touting the values of their hunting ambitions, calling themselves conservationists. Talk is easy and those who do not walk their talk do it in the back woods where many who care about the wrongs will not see, or so they hope. The word conservation is often used, overused, misrepresented and far too often not practiced.
cause of troubles for many in these towns. The people who practice good housekeeping around their properties are affected by bears walking through to where the food source is. Town Politicians /Councils do not have the resolve to fix the problem by making laws to change the habits of the irresponsible. They could do it, they could alleviate public safety concerns, but no, they would rather allow the demonizing of an animal, an animal that is only taking advantage of easy food sources, and trick people into thinking they are interested in the safety of northern residents.
Look at the facts. Contrary to what what has been written, male bears do not often kill cubs. Bears prey on very few moose calves when the whole bear population is considered. The drop in the moose population is the fault of humans, not bears or wolves. Bears have not attacked children and the few injuries that have occurred to adults, most often had off leash dogs involved. Unfortunately many people are affected by the hype, the false information intended to alarm people, not educate. If you see a bear while walking there is no reason to be afraid
Politicians claim the spring hunt will result in better safety for people in towns. They are wrong . Their own scientists know it and if they do not want to believe their science people then read science from other areas of North America. The conclusions are the same. A change in people's habits will increase public safety, not spring bear hunts.
for the winter that will arrive in November. Berries become abundant in July, mast crops such as nuts are ready in September and October. Food is the bears primary motive. People can supply the food if they are not careful, however humans themselves are not part of a bears diet.
Stop giving bears a bad name
Many people who live in Northern Ontario are afraid of bears and rightfully so. This fear is not because bears are normally dangerous or a threat to people. This fear does not relate to anything bears do. It is because of the misinformation and much of it intentional by certain hunting organizations that promote the killing of bears. Why do they do this? Simple. What people fear, they want to kill. The more ways the black bear can be demonized, the less opposition to the some of the horrific methods of killing them.
