Haas missed a 4 footer on No. 18 to give Calcavecchia a shot at sole possession of the lead at the midway point. Calcavecchia said finishing with a birdie improves his mood, lead or no lead.
Sitting three strokes back of Stoelting are Margarita Ramos, Casey Grice and Therese Koelbaek who all shot two under 70.
Casey was over par before matching the PGA Tour record for the best score on a back nine, an 8 under 27 with six birdies and an eagle. That was part of his 7 under Reebok Nano 6.0 Gum
"It really doesn't matter, other than the fact that I'm happier that I made the putt on the last hole, made the 8 footer for birdie as opposed to missing it," said Calcavecchia, who is seeking his first Champions Tour win since the 2012 Montreal Championship. "Sixty nine sounds better than 70, it always has."

ASHEVILLE Jackie Stoelting fired an opening round 5 under par 67 on Friday to sit three strokes clear of a pack of three Saucony Type A6
Despite starting her day with a three putt bogey on the first, Stoelting kept her composure and quickly responded with birdies on two of her next three holes. Following her birdie on the par 3 fourth, the skies opened up but Stoelting kept her composure and grinded out a pair of pars before the rain subsided.
"It's huge," Stoelting said of making pars in tough conditions. "Those pars felt like birdies to me. It was just pouring and I had three woods into holes where I had mid to short irons into before so it was just playing difficult and I just stayed patient."
Cheyenne Woods, the niece of Tiger Woods, shot 75.
