A two second following distance is achieved by scanning ahead and focusing on a fixed point such as a pole, shadow or pavement marking. When the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead passes that point, count the number of seconds it takes to reach the same point saying, "One thousand and one, one thousand and two." If you reach the point before getting to two, you are too close to the vehicle ahead, according to the driver's license manual.

2. Would you review with the readers the consequences of following too close behind the vehicle in front of them in town and on highways? Personally, having someone following really close behind me makes me very nervous, particularly in bad weather. Sometimes it is just not available to move to another lane. Thanks, Concerned.1.
