The good news for campers is the campgrounds already provide food lockers which are bear resistant and included in the cost of renting a site. The proposed order acknowledges that early on campers may view using the lockers as an inconvenience but over time will see the benefits.

The service is in the midst of a 30 day comment period for a proposed forest order that would require proper food storage at campgrounds on Forest Service land in the Lake Tahoe basin.
Lane said on busy summer weekends there can be as many as 1,000 campers in Fallen Leaf campground alone. Many of them are unfamiliar with the forest environment and simply don't think to stow food properly, he said.
Priority enforcement sites in the proposed order are and campgrounds, but once implemented it could be amended to include more sites.

It would be a step sterner than the existing conditions in which rangers or other officials can remind campers to use anti bear containers to store food but can't compel them to comply.

Bears that grow accustomed to scavenging human food from campgrounds are at risk of becoming problem bears because they are more likely to come into conflict with people, Lane said. Hence the desire to turn up the heat when it comes to getting people to reduce the risk by storing food safely.
