While the Lauterbachs are going headfirst into their new venture with the Beehive, it's clear in talking to the couple that their passion remains in honey, a family business for them over the last three generations.
The store quietly opened last summer. Though word of mouth has been strong, the Lauterbachs are trying to get their concept noticed more by the general public.
As support grows for 100 kilo metre diets, the couple hopes that unique, fresh food and other products will take off in S, D and G.
A reopening could be in store for the spring.
The shelves here are called cells, like the ones in a beehive. Since there isn't much space available on these shelves, quality takes precedence over quantity.
"We're like a year round farmers' market," said Joanne. "That's what some people say. The tomatoes may look different, and you may not see all the same size potatoes. It's true from the farm."
While Coffey hasn't seen any kind of huge cash windfall from the Beehive project, he admits it's early going.

For vendors like Reg Coffey, of Coffey's Coffee in Ingleside, who takes pride in the freshness of his products, the Beehive is a practical and economical choice.
At the Beehive, Coffey can control how long his coffee beans or pre ground coffee are available.
Store take on distinctly local flavour
So far, there is a community of about 25 vendors, such as Amstutz Beef Farm, The Mix Company, Linda's Garden Goodies, and Steward Bags, to name a few. They all pool their money together to pay for the store's overhead costs such as Interac and chest freezers. The Lauterbachs then take 10% at Saucony Outlet New York
The Beehive concept evolved out of frustration for the couple, and essentially became part of a renegade approach to agrobusiness after a major business opportunity failed to materialize last year.

The bee analogy comes natural to Mark and his wife Joanne Lauterbach. They run the Glengarry Beehive store, plus a honey outfit called Levac Apiaries on the same property.
"That was the turning point for us," Mark said. "And we knew a lot of other (agro) people who were in the same turmoil as us."
