Thanks to experiences during boyhood and fatherhood, Joe knows, "You can never do the right thing after you've closed up the local honky tonk."

Set at a cabin overlooking Mississippi's Lake Belle Reve, "Ghost Brothers" is the story of two sets of brawling brothers one in afterlife limbo since 1967 and the other spiraling toward a modern day tragedy.

Anyone sensitive to coarse language should be aware that "Ghost Brothers" may set a single night record for F bombs uttered at Clowes Hall, which is presenting the show as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

Greenwood, known as a film actor and not as a singer, aces his performances of "How Many Days" and "What Kind of Man Am I." While he mumbles dialogue at times, it should be remembered that Joe is a broken man especially feeling pressure while fellow cast members surround him and perform "Tear This Cabin Down."

When the "Ghost Brothers" tour visits Clowes Hall on Oct. 18, attendees will experience a show that resembles an old school radio play. Conventional acting and choreography are parts of the package, but only as accents an approach that fits Mellencamp's description of "Ghost Brothers" as a "play with music" rather than a musical. Yet the first staging of "Ghost Brothers," a production in Atlanta in 2012, featured visible spurts of "blood" and leaps from a stage prop cliff. Too close to the processed and packaged Great White Way for Mellencamp's tastes.

´╗┐Stephen King collaboration packs an emotional wallop

Bruce Greenwood, who portrays central character Joe McCandless, supplied an accurate summary of "Ghost Brothers" during an interview with The Star: "It's about the corrosive nature of secrets, and the elusive nature of redemption."

More problematic is a brief segment in which struggling musician Drake McCandless spits homophobic slurs at Frank, his budding novelist brother. The passage isn't needed to infuse Drake with villainy, and only reflects poorly on the superstar names above the "Ghost Brothers" title.

John Mellencamp and Stephen King say "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" isn't ready for Broadway, but their theatrical production can't get much better than the version that debuted Thursday at IU Auditorium.

Jesse Lenat, who portrays the Zydeco Cowboy, narrates the tale with empathy and Southern charm.

Greenwood's Joe provides a connection between two pairs of brothers who take sibling rivalry to bitter extremes. Joe is the younger brother of Jack (portrayed by Peter Albrink) and Andy (Travis Smith), who died in 1967. Joe is the father of Frank (Lucas Kavner) and Drake (Joe Tippett).

If the thought of spending an evening with bickering brothers, multiplied by two, isn't appealing to potential ticket buyers, the show has a trio of saviors, so to speak:

At the show's conclusion, the IU Auditorium audience rose to its feet and delivered one of the longest, robust curtain call ovations I've witnessed at a rock concert or play.

Andy York, guitarist in Mellencamp's band, adds a haunting wash of white noise to "How Many Days." Troye Kinnett, keyboard player in Mellencamp's band, honks a vicious harmonica during "Tear This Cabin Down." Famed studio genius T Bone Burnett is the show's musical director.

King's text finds a brisk, entertaining stride in the second half of the two act show. He pushes enough spooky buttons, and the show will satisfy anyone thirsting for over the top violence. (At one point, "Ghost Brothers" resembles a Mellencamp Tarantino collaboration). But, in the tradition of non horror adaptations "Stand By Me" and "The Shawshank Redemption," King shows a wealth of knowledge about heart, emotion and the human condition.
