Last week in this space we defended CFL officials for almost always getting the calls correct this season.
Many eyes are on former Riders slotback Weston Dressler, whose tryout with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs doesn't seem to be going as smoothly as he had hoped.
Fans in the Prairies weren't overly impressed with the duds rolled out by the Roughriders and Blue Bombers, while the Lions already had their third jerseys that they wore against the Argos on Sunday night. Toronto's uniforms actually weren't that bad.
The margin of victory is up, scoring is down, penalties are up, attendance is down, star players are hurt, and stadium aren't opening on time.
The former CFLer pointed out that there are hardly any flags in an NFL game, and he's right. The average NFL game has about 13 penalties; this year the CFL has averaged 23 infractions per contest. The average in the CFL over the last three years was about 18 penalties, and that's still too many.
So the CFL needs to stop calling penalties by the book. The referees need to get a better feel for the game and throw flags when it actually might affect the outcome. Leave all the chintzy penalties alone, because no one likes it, and in the end it doesn't matter.
The biggest problem with the number of penalties being called is it has taken the thrill out of the game. Whenever there is a big play or a kick returner is making a long run to the end zone, fans aren't enjoying the moment. They are looking for a flag.
DUDS A DUD?
NFL teams must declare their 53 man rosters on Aug. 30.
The Ticats made official Tuesday what most expected: quarterback Dan LeFevour is done for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. LeFevour, who was the first pivot since 2002 to have two 100 yard rushing games in a season, suffered the injury on a running play against the Stampeders. The Tabbies have the bye this week, but Jeremiah Masoli will likely be the next quarterback up until Zach Collaros returns from injury . The youth movement continues in Ottawa, where the RedBlacks released veteran receiver Paris Jackson this week. Look for more moves like that to be made as the CFL approaches its deadline for cutting veterans without having to pay them out for the Reebok For Women 2018

The only problem for Brink is he's had two 300 yard games in Saucony Shadow Vegan
Those Lions jerseys look good, too, but Reebok Answer 6
rest of the season . Good news for the Stampeders and the CFL: reigning most outstanding player Jon Cornish, who has been out since Week 2 with a concussion, is getting close to playing and could be back as early as this week . The NFL is about to increase its practice rosters from eight to 10 players, which would make 64 fewer imports available to CFL teams . The Riders and Lions swept the CFL player of the week awards. Three more games against the West, and three more games in which the boys from the Least Division will be the underdogs. That will make the West 23 3 against the East.
Dressler had a 19 yard kickoff return in Kansas City's pre season opener, but he didn't touch the pigskin on Sunday night against the Carolina Panthers. Dressler is a free agent in the CFL, where he would likely return quickly instead of searching for another Saucony Omni 15 NFL shot.
Stop calling so many penalties
"Players do the same thing," a former CFL player recently told the Blitz. "It harms the fan experience."
his CFL career, but both of them have come against the Alouettes.
Just a question: Why doesn't the CFL, which is a fan driven league, get the fans involved in the third jersey process? It looks like the Troy Smith era is over in Montreal, as the Alouettes placed the former Ohio State star on the six game injured list.
Now it's time to take them to task for the number of flags they are throwing, because they are doing it way too often.
they fail miserably when it comes to their intended purpose of identifying players. You can't see the numbers, which basically makes them pointless. Kind of like the Signature Uniforms at least based on the fan reaction.
The Als signed Smith to a big contract in the off season, so his placement on the six game is likely just to keep his contract off the books while he wasn't playing. Alex Brink took over for Smith against the Riders on Saturday and completed 19 of 31 attempts for 187 yards and an interception.
Another former Rider hoping to stick in the NFL, running back Kory Sheets, had five carries for 27 yards on Saturday against the Detroit Lions. He also caught two passes and returned two kicks.
The bottom line is calling so many penalties will drive fans away. It has to stop.
So kudos to the CFL for taking everyone's attention away from all of that and introducing the Signature Uniforms, a series of third jerseys by Reebok that are drawing mostly negative reviews from fans. It's probably a good thing teams won't be wearing these uniforms too often. Then again, organizations will probably still get a bump in sales from the fans who will always be there to support their favourite squads.
